Convert GLB to USDZ

USDZ is the format Apple devices open in AR Quick Look: tap a link on an iPhone or iPad and the model appears in the room at its real size. Web stores and Shopify themes often need the same model as GLB for Android and as USDZ for iOS. This page turns a GLB into a USDZ on your device.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add the .glb

Drop it onto the box or click to choose it, up to 100 MB. Draco and meshopt compressed GLBs work too.

  2. 2

    Check the size

GLB is in metres. If the model was exported in millimetres or centimetres, pick that scale so it is not huge in AR.

  3. 3

    Download the USDZ

The file is built in your browser: meshes, PBR materials and textures, with textures resized to at most 2048 pixels.

  4. 4

    Open it on an iPhone

AirDrop or link the .usdz and tap it. Quick Look shows it in 3D and in AR. On a web page, link it with rel="ar".

What to know before you convert

  • The USDZ is a still model. Animations, skinning and morph targets are not carried over; animated GLBs are written in their rest pose.
  • Materials are converted to USD Preview Surface: base colour (with its alpha), metallic, roughness, normal, emissive and occlusion maps. A separate alpha map and extensions such as clearcoat, sheen or transmission are not kept.
  • USDZ has no double-sided flag, so thin surfaces like leaves or paper show only from the front side.
  • Textures are re-encoded as PNG and capped at 2048 pixels, which keeps the file within what Quick Look loads reliably.
  • Nothing is repaired or simplified. Very heavy models can still be slow to open on older iPhones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Send the file to the phone (AirDrop, Files, Messages or email) and tap it. Quick Look opens it with an Object and an AR tab. On a website, wrap a picture in a link to the .usdz with rel="ar" and Safari opens it straight in AR.
AR Quick Look reads the USDZ in metres. glTF is defined in metres too, but some tools export GLBs with millimetre or centimetre numbers. Choose the matching scale before downloading; the size readout shows the result in metres.
Yes. Base colour, metallic, roughness, normal, emissive and occlusion maps are copied into the USDZ as PNG images and wired to a USD Preview Surface material, which is what Quick Look renders. Transparency in the base colour texture is kept too.
No. This converter writes a still model. If the GLB is animated, it is exported in its rest pose and the page tells you how many clips were left out.
Pack it into a single .glb first with our glTF to GLB tool, which copies the .bin and textures in without changing them, then convert the GLB here.
No. The page reads the file and converts it inside your browser with the open-source three.js library. Nothing is sent to our servers, there is no account, and no credits are used. Closing the tab discards everything.
