Convert a Picture into an STL for 3D Printing

Upload a photo or picture of one object and AI builds a full 3D model, back and sides included. Download it as an STL and slice it. Usually about 1-3 minutes.

How to Convert an Image to STL

1

Upload a Photo

Choose a PNG or JPG where one object fills most of the frame, on a plain background, in good light, under 10MB.

2

AI Builds the 3D Model

The AI reconstructs the whole object, including the sides the picture doesn't show, usually in about 1-3 minutes. Rotate it in the viewer; if a hidden side looks wrong, try a three-quarter view photo.

3

Download the STL

Click Download STL. The file holds the shape of the model, ready for any slicer. The textured GLB is there too.

4

Slice and Print

Open the STL in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Cura or another slicer, set the size in mm, add supports, slice and print.

How to Print Your STL

Once the STL is downloaded, these steps get it onto the build plate in the three most popular slicers.

Bambu Studio

  1. Import: drag the STL onto the build plate, or use File > Import.
  2. Scale: select the model, open the Scale tool and type the size you want in mm. Keep uniform scaling on so the proportions stay the same.
  3. Orient: use Lay on Face to put a flat side down, or Auto Orient.
  4. Supports: in the Support tab, turn on Enable support and pick a tree type for organic shapes.
  5. Slice and check the layer preview before you send it to the printer.

OrcaSlicer

  1. Import: drag the STL onto the plate, or use File > Import.
  2. Scale: select the model and set its size in mm with the Scale tool, with uniform scaling on.
  3. Orient: use Lay on Face or Auto Orient so the largest flat area sits on the bed.
  4. Supports: open the Support tab, enable support and choose tree supports for overhangs.
  5. Slice and scroll through the preview to spot gaps or floating parts.

Cura

  1. Import: use File > Open File(s), or drag the STL into the window.
  2. Scale: click the Scale tool in the left toolbar, keep Uniform Scaling ticked and enter the size in mm.
  3. Orient: use the Rotate tool and Lay Flat, or Select Face to Align to Build Plate.
  4. Supports: tick Generate Support in the print settings; Tree support works well on figures and organic shapes.
  5. Slice, then use the Preview tab to check each layer.

Turn a Picture into a 3D Print

Going from a picture to a 3D print used to mean hours of modeling in CAD, or a photogrammetry scan built from dozens of photos. Here one image is enough. The AI reads the object in your picture, builds a full 3D shape, fills in the sides and back it cannot see, and gives you an STL that any slicer can open.

If you are wondering how to 3D print a picture of something, the workflow is the same as for any model you download: upload the photo, check the model in the viewer, download the STL, then scale it, add supports and slice it. The image to 3D print route suits figures, toys, pets, decor and props. It is not meant for mechanical parts that must fit exact measurements; use CAD software for those.

Many image to STL converters turn a picture into a flat relief, where brightness becomes height. This tool builds a full object you can turn all the way around. If a flat relief is what you want, try the lithophane generator or the PNG to STL converter instead. Prefer a model you can edit, texture or use in a game? Image to 3D runs the same AI with the textured GLB first.

Print Tips for Models Made from a Photo

  • Choose the right photo: One subject that fills most of the frame, on a plain background, in even, soft light. A three-quarter view shows more of the shape than a straight front view. Avoid blur, hard shadows, group shots and small subjects in busy scenes.
  • Set the size in the slicer: STL files carry no units, so the model can open tiny or huge. Use the slicer's scale tool with uniform scaling on and type the height you want in mm, or resize the file first with Scale STL.
  • Add supports: Models made from photos usually have overhangs such as arms, ears, chins and tails. Turn on supports (tree supports suit organic shapes) and put the flattest side on the bed.
  • Colour is not in the STL: STL stores shape only, so the print comes out in your filament colour. For a multicolour print, paint the colours in a slicer that supports it, such as Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer, and save the project as 3MF. Or print in one colour and paint it by hand. The textured version of your model is in the GLB download.
  • Check the file before you print: Open the STL in the STL viewer to look at it from every side. If the file is too heavy for your slicer, reduce the STL file size first. If the slicer reports mesh errors, run its built-in repair.
  • Print a small test first: Thin parts get fragile when a model is scaled down. Print a small version, check the details, then scale up.

Image to STL: What Goes In and What Comes Out

Input

  • Image: PNG or JPG, under 10MB recommended
  • Best Results: One object, sharp focus, plain background, three-quarter view
  • Avoid: Group shots, heavy blur, tiny subjects in big scenes

Output

  • Downloads: STL (for slicers) and GLB (textured, for viewing and editing)
  • Generation Time: Usually about 1-3 minutes
  • Cost: 20 credits per model, the same as Image to 3D
  • Size: No fixed units: you set the print size in mm in your slicer

Frequently Asked Questions

You can start free. New accounts get 60 free credits, and each model costs 20 credits (the same as Image to 3D), so the free credits cover 3 models. After that, paid plans and one-time credit packs add more credits; see the pricing page.
No. It builds a full 3D object you can view from every side, not a height map pressed into a flat plate.
It doesn't see it, so the AI makes a best guess from the visible side. Simple, symmetrical objects come out most faithfully. A three-quarter view gives it more to work with than a flat front view.
One object, in focus, filling most of the frame, on a plain background, in good light. Product photos, toy photos and clean illustrations work well.
No. STL holds geometry only. For a multicolour print, paint the model in a slicer that supports it (such as Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer) and save it as 3MF. The textured version is in the GLB download.
