Convert FBX to OBJ, with Materials

FBX is the exchange format of Autodesk tools, game engines and Mixamo, but many programs, older pipelines and mesh editors only read OBJ. This page opens the FBX on your device, keeps UVs, normals and material colours, and writes an OBJ with a matching MTL file and texture images.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add the .fbx

Drop the file onto the box or click to choose it. If its textures are separate image files, select them together with the FBX.

  2. 2

    Check the preview

Meshes, materials and the size are shown. Missing or unreadable textures are listed so you know what to add.

  3. 3

    Pick the scale

FBX from Maya and 3ds Max is usually in centimetres. Keep the numbers, or scale to metres for Blender.

  4. 4

    Download the ZIP

You get the .obj, its .mtl and the texture images, already linked to each other. Unzip and import the OBJ.

What to know before you convert

  • OBJ is a static format. Animations, bones and blend shapes are not carried over; the model is written in its rest pose.
  • Materials are mapped to basic MTL colours and a diffuse texture. Shader graphs, PBR maps other than the colour map and lights or cameras are dropped.
  • FBX 7.0 (2011) and newer, binary or ASCII, is supported. Older FBX 6 files need to be re-saved from a 3D app or the Autodesk FBX Converter first.
  • Embedded textures are extracted. External textures are only included if you add the image files together with the FBX.
  • NURBS surfaces and curves are not converted, only polygon meshes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if the converter can find them. Textures embedded in the FBX are extracted automatically. If the FBX points to outside image files, add those images together with the FBX. The ZIP then holds the OBJ, the MTL and the images, with the MTL already pointing at them.
OBJ has no way to store bones or keyframes, so every OBJ converter gives you a still mesh. If you need the animation in an open format, convert the FBX to GLB instead, which keeps skeletons and clips.
OBJ has no unit, so programs guess. FBX files from Maya, 3ds Max and Mixamo usually use centimetres, which looks 100 times too big in a metre-based tool like Blender. Choose the centimetres-to-metres scale before downloading.
Files from before FBX 2011 (version 6.x) use a layout the browser loader cannot read. Open the file in Blender, Maya or 3ds Max, or in the free Autodesk FBX Converter, and save it again as a recent binary FBX.
Yes. A Mixamo FBX loads with its skin texture, and the OBJ is the character in its bind pose. OBJ cannot hold an animation frame, so pose the character in Blender first if you need a different stance.
No. The page reads the file and converts it inside your browser with the open-source three.js library. Nothing is sent to our servers, there is no account, and no credits are used. Closing the tab discards everything.
