Texturing an FBX for a game or animation
- FBX is the usual format between Blender, Maya, Unity and Unreal. It carries the mesh, its UVs and its material slots.
- With "Keep my UVs" (the default) the AI paints into your layout, one texture per material slot (up to 8), so the PNGs drop back into your project.
- Models with more material slots are combined into one texture.
- Need an FBX file back? Download the textured GLB and use the GLB to FBX converter, or apply the PNG to your original FBX.
How to texture a FBX file with AI
- 1
Upload your FBX
Drop the .fbx file (up to 60 MB and 600k triangles). Your UVs are kept by default.
- 2
Describe the look
Write the material, like "rusty sci-fi armour", or pick a style.
- 3
Paint with AI
Auto paints 4, 6 or 8 views. Turn the model to repaint any spot.
- 4
Fix and finish
Heal seams, paint by hand and make PBR maps in your browser for free.
- 5
Download
Save the texture PNGs for your FBX, or a textured GLB with its maps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, with "Keep my UVs" each material slot gets its own texture, up to 8. A model with more slots gets one combined texture.
Yes. Apply the texture PNG to your original FBX in the engine, or import the textured GLB, which both engines can read with their glTF importers.
The studio paints the surface of the mesh. Keep using your original FBX for the rig and animation, and apply the new texture PNG to it.
No. The shape, polygon count and size stay exactly the same. The AI only paints the texture on the surface.
Each AI view costs 2 credits, and an Auto texture paints 4 views for 8 credits (6 or 8 views for hidden areas cost 12 or 16). New accounts get free credits to start. The Heal and Paint brushes and the PBR maps are free.
