Re-texturing a PLY scan
- PLY is the usual export from 3D scanners and photogrammetry. Its colour is often stored per vertex, and it usually has no UV map.
- The studio makes a UV map automatically and paints a new texture into it. The scan’s old vertex colours are not used or kept.
- Scans can be heavy: the studio takes up to 600k triangles and 60 MB, so reduce a bigger scan first.
- The textured result downloads as a GLB with its texture, which most 3D apps open.
How to texture a PLY file with AI
- 1
Upload your PLY
Drop the .ply scan (up to 60 MB and 600k triangles). New UVs are made automatically.
- 2
Describe the surface
Write the new look, like "clean white marble" or "painted ceramic", or pick a style.
- 3
Paint with AI
Auto paints 4, 6 or 8 views; use 6 or 8 for scans with deep folds.
- 4
Fix and finish
Heal seams, paint by hand and make PBR maps for free.
- 5
Download
Save a textured GLB with its maps, or the texture PNG.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The studio paints a new texture from your description; the PLY’s vertex colours are not used. Keep your original file if you need the scanned colours.
The studio opens up to 600k triangles and 60 MB. Reduce the scan in your scanning app or Blender first; the polygon count checker shows how many triangles it has.
The studio downloads a textured GLB or the texture PNG. A GLB keeps the texture, which a PLY with vertex colours cannot hold the same way.
No. The shape, polygon count and size stay exactly the same. The AI only paints the texture on the surface.
Each AI view costs 2 credits, and an Auto texture paints 4 views for 8 credits (6 or 8 views for hidden areas cost 12 or 16). New accounts get free credits to start. The Heal and Paint brushes and the PBR maps are free.
