PMX Viewer

To view a PMX file online, drop the whole model folder or its .zip here, so the textures come with it. The MikuMikuDance model opens in your browser with its toon shading, bones and morphs. You can play a .vmd motion, check which textures are missing and export the pose as GLB or OBJ.

How the PMX viewer works

  1. 1

    Drop the model folder

Drag the folder or the .zip the model came in, or pick the .pmx or .pmd with its texture files. Nothing is uploaded: every file stays in your browser.

  2. 2

See it as MMD draws it

The model opens with its toon shading and textures. Japanese file names inside zips made on Japanese Windows are decoded, and any texture that cannot be found is listed.

  3. 3

    Check and test it

Read the vertex, material, bone and morph counts, switch on wireframe or bones, move the morph sliders, or drop a .vmd motion and press play.

  4. 4

    Export it

Save the current pose as GLB (one file, textures inside) or as OBJ with MTL and textures in a zip, ready for Blender, Unity, Unreal or a 3D printer slicer.

No physics here. MMD moves hair, skirts and accessories with a physics engine. This viewer plays bone and morph keys (with IK) but does not simulate physics, so those parts follow the bones stiffly during a motion.

PMX, PMD and VMD files

.pmxPMX model
The current MikuMikuDance model format, made with PMX Editor. Mesh, materials, bones, IK, morphs and physics bodies in one file; textures sit beside it.
.pmdPMD model
The older model format of the first MikuMikuDance versions. Same idea as PMX with fewer features and Shift-JIS names.
.vmdVMD motion
A motion, dance or pose for MMD: bone and morph keyframes (sometimes a camera). It plays on any model whose bone names match.

Common problems when opening PMX files

  • The model is white or grey

The textures were not opened with it. Drop the whole folder or zip, not just the .pmx. Missing ones are listed under the viewer by the path the model expects.

  • File names in the zip are garbled

The zip was made on Japanese Windows and saved its names in Shift-JIS. This viewer decodes them for you. Unzipping on Mac or Linux without choosing Shift-JIS breaks them, and the textures stop matching.

  • Only part of the model has textures

Some textures are .tga, .dds or sphere maps (.spa, .sph) in a sub-folder. Keep the folder structure as it came, and check the missing list.

  • The dance looks wrong

A .vmd moves bones by their Japanese names. A model with different bone names will not follow it; the viewer shows how many of the motion's bones were found.

  • Hair and skirts do not swing

Physics is not simulated in the browser here. The motion plays on the bones and morphs only.

What this PMX viewer does

PMX and PMD

PMX 2.0 models from PMX Editor and PMD models from the original MikuMikuDance, with their toon, sphere and texture maps.

Folders and zips

Drop a whole folder or a .zip. Texture paths are matched without caring about case or slashes, and Shift-JIS names are decoded.

Missing texture list

Every texture the model asks for that is not in your files is listed by its path, so you know exactly what to add.

Bones, morphs and motion

Bone overlay, a slider for each shape morph (facial expressions are usually these), and .vmd motion playback with IK.

GLB and OBJ export

The pose you see, baked into a plain mesh with its colours and textures. Optional scale to metres.

Private and free

Runs entirely in your browser. No signup, no watermark, no install.

Frequently Asked Questions

PMX (Polygon Model eXtended) is the 3D model format of MikuMikuDance (MMD), the free Japanese program for making character animations, and of PMX Editor. A .pmx file holds the mesh, materials, bones, IK, morphs (such as facial expressions) and physics bodies. The textures are separate image files next to it, which is why models are shared as a folder or a zip.
PMD (Polygon Model Data) is the older format used by the first versions of MikuMikuDance. PMX replaced it, adding up to four bones per vertex, more morph types, Unicode names and more material options. This viewer opens both. Newer models are usually PMX; older ones are often PMD.
Drop the model folder or zip on this page. The .pmx is read in your browser and drawn with its textures, so you do not need MMD, PMX Editor, Blender or Windows. It works on Mac, Linux, Chromebook and most phones. To open a single file, pick the .pmx together with its texture files, keeping any sub-folders such as "tex".
The textures are separate files, and the model looks for them by the path written inside it, for example "tex\face.png". If only the .pmx was opened, or the zip was unpacked with broken Japanese names, the images cannot be found. This viewer lists every missing path: add those files (drop them on the viewer) and the model reloads with them.
Most MMD models are zipped on Japanese Windows, which saves file names in Shift-JIS without marking them. Other systems then read them in the wrong encoding and show garbled names, and the textures stop matching. This viewer decodes those names back to Japanese, so the zip opens as it is. To unzip it yourself, use an unzip tool that lets you choose the Shift-JIS (cp932) encoding.
Yes. Drop a .vmd motion file on the viewer after the model has opened, or include it in the zip, and press play. Bone and morph keys are played with IK. Physics (hair, skirts and other rigid bodies) is not simulated here, so those parts follow the bones stiffly, and camera motions are not used.
Open the model, pause the motion on the pose you want, and press GLB or OBJ. The export is a static mesh with the colours and main textures, but no toon shading, bones or morphs, because those do not carry over to OBJ. For a rigged model in Blender, use the free mmd_tools add-on; for FBX, import the GLB into Blender and export from there.
Yes. The viewer is free with no signup, and your files are never uploaded: they are read and drawn in your browser. Only the open-source three.js MMD reader is downloaded when you open the first model. Respect the model author's terms (the readme in the zip) before you share an export or use it commercially.
