A Substance Painter Alternative for AI Texturing
Adobe Substance 3D Painter is the industry tool for hand-painting physically based materials, with smart materials, masks and UDIM support. It is a deep desktop app with a subscription. The3DAI AI 3D Texturing Studio is a much simpler tool for a different moment: you describe the look in a sentence and AI paints the whole model for you in the browser. It is not a replacement for Painter in a PBR production pipeline.

| Formats | Upload GLB, GLTF, OBJ, FBX, STL or PLY (up to 60 MB). Download a textured GLB or the texture PNG | Imports FBX, OBJ, ABC, DAE, PLY, glTF, GLB and USD; exports to "any renderer or game engine" |
| PBR maps (normal, roughness, metallic) | Yes, free: normal, roughness, metal and ambient-occlusion maps made in your browser from the painted texture and packed into the GLB. They are derived from the colour, not painted by the AI | Yes: full material painting (sheen, clear-coat, subsurface and more) |
| Keeps your UVs | Yes by default ("Keep my UVs"). Overlapping UVs get a warning and a one-click "Make new UVs". Models with no UVs get new UVs automatically | Yes, and "imported models don't need any special preparation"; UDIM multi-tile painting |
| Repaint just one region | Yes: brush a part and repaint only that part with AI, or fix seams and spots by hand with the free Heal and Paint brushes | Yes, by hand: smart masks and non-destructive painting (no AI repaint listed on the Painter page) |
| Runs in the browser | Yes | No |
When to pick Substance 3D Painter
- You need hand-authored PBR materials (roughness, metallic, normal, height) for a game engine or renderer.
- You want precise hand control: smart materials, masks, wear and tear, UDIM tiles.
- You already work in the Adobe Substance tools or a studio pipeline built on them.
When to pick The3DAI
- You want a finished colour texture from a sentence, not hours of hand painting.
- You do not want a subscription or a desktop install to try an idea.
- You need a quick look for a prototype, a print preview, a mockup or a placeholder asset.
- You want to fix one part fast: brush the area and let AI repaint only that part.
How to texture a 3D model with AI on The3DAI
- 1
Upload your model
Drop a GLB, GLTF, OBJ, FBX, STL or PLY file, or pick a sample. Keep your own UV map, or let the studio make new UVs.
- 2
Describe the texture
Write what the surface should look like, or pick a style or a prompt idea.
- 3
Paint with AI
Auto paints 4, 6 or 8 views. Turn the model to paint any spot again, or brush one part and repaint only that.
- 4
Fix and finish
Heal seams and paint by hand for free, then make normal, roughness, metal and AO maps in your browser.
- 5
Download
Get a textured GLB with its maps, or the texture PNGs to use in Blender, Unity, Unreal or Godot.
