STL to Voxel Converter

Drop a 3D model and it turns into cubes: choose how many voxels fit along the longest side, solid or hollow, and keep the colours of a textured GLB. Download a .vox file for MagicaVoxel or a blocky OBJ, STL or GLB. Everything runs in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your model

Drop an STL, OBJ or GLB file up to 50 MB, or try the sample model. The file is read on your device.

  2. 2

    Pick the resolution

Slide from 16 to 256 voxels along the longest side. 32 to 64 gives a chunky pixel-art look; 128 and up keeps fine detail.

  3. 3

Choose solid or hollow, and the colour

Solid fills the inside; hollow keeps a one-voxel shell. Keep the model’s texture or vertex colours, or paint every voxel one colour.

  4. 4

    Download

Save .vox for MagicaVoxel and other voxel editors, or a blocky mesh as OBJ, STL, GLB or a GLB with colours.

Under the hood the converter lays a grid over the model, marks every cell a triangle passes through, then fills the inside by casting rays along all three axes and keeping a cell when at least two of them agree it is inside, so a small hole in the mesh does not streak a whole row. Each surface voxel takes the colour of the closest point on the model, read from the texture or the vertex colours.

Supported formats

FormatOpenDownloadNotes
STLYesYesBinary and ASCII in. Out: the voxels as one closed mesh, ready to slice. STL has no colour.
OBJYesYesIn: geometry (MTL textures are separate files, so use GLB for colour). Out: the voxel mesh as quads.
GLBYesYesIn: geometry with textures and vertex colours. Out: a plain mesh, or a "Colour GLB" with a colour per voxel face.
VOXNoYesMagicaVoxel format, version 150: size, voxels and a palette of up to 255 colours. At most 256 voxels per side.

Need to change a mesh format without voxels? Use the STL file converter. If the solid fill looks patchy, the mesh may have holes: repair the STL first, or check it in the STL viewer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop the STL into the converter above, set the resolution (16 to 256 voxels along the longest side) and choose solid or hollow. The voxels appear in the 3D preview straight away, and you can download them as a .vox file or as a blocky OBJ, STL or GLB.
Yes. Download the .vox file and open it in MagicaVoxel or any editor that reads the .vox format. The file holds the size, every voxel and a palette of up to 255 colours. MagicaVoxel models are at most 256 voxels per side, which is why the slider stops at 256.
The resolution is the number of voxels along the model’s longest side. 16 to 48 gives a chunky, game-ready pixel-art look, 64 is a good start for most models, and 128 to 256 keeps small details such as fingers or text. Every doubling makes a solid model about 8 times more voxels.
Solid fills the whole inside of the model, which is what you want for editing in a voxel editor or for a solid print. Hollow keeps only a one-voxel shell, so the file is much smaller and big models stay under the limit. A closed (watertight) model gives the cleanest solid fill.
For a GLB with a texture or vertex colours, yes: each voxel takes the colour of the closest point on the model, then the colours are reduced to at most 255 so they fit a .vox palette. STL files have no colour, so they use one colour that you pick. Use the Colour GLB download to keep the colours in a mesh.
No. The model is read and voxelized by your own browser, so the file never leaves your device and there is no signup. Large models take longer on phones and older laptops.
Files can be up to 50 MB. A result can have up to 2 million voxels on a computer and 500,000 on a phone, so the page stays responsive. If a setting goes over, the tool says so and offers a lower resolution or the hollow mode.
Yes, download the STL: it holds only the outer faces of the voxels, joined into one closed mesh that slicers accept. For Minecraft-style builds, a resolution of 32 to 96 gives a block count you can build by hand; the .vox file shows every block and colour.
