Free Blender assets: where to get them and what the licence says

Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: the safest free Blender assets are CC0, which means you can use them in any project with no credit. Poly Haven, ambientCG and Kenney release their assets as CC0. Blendkit (formerly BlenderKit) has a large free tier inside Blender. Sketchfab and Blender Studio mix licences, so check each asset before you use it.

Below is one table of nine free sources, with the licence each site states on its own pages, then the catch for each, how to add downloads to Blender's Asset Browser, and a quick licence cheat sheet. Licences can change, so always read the one shipped with the file.

Try it on your own model

Upload a GLB, OBJ, FBX, STL or PLY file (or pick a sample), describe the look, and let AI paint it from every side.

What to know about each source

Poly Haven

Poly Haven says all of its assets are CC0: HDRIs, textures and models. On 18 October 2026 its public API listed 997 HDRIs, 869 textures and 521 models. The texture we checked came with colour, normal (OpenGL and DirectX), roughness, AO and displacement maps from 1K to 8K, plus a ready .blend file. The site's logos and other content are not CC0, only the assets.

ambientCG

ambientCG releases its materials, models and other assets under CC0 1.0. You do not need to credit it, and commercial use is allowed. Its home page calls it one of the largest sources for free PBR materials, HDRIs and models.

Kenney

Kenney says all of its game assets are public domain (CC0), commercial use is fine and attribution is not required. The one rule: do not use the Kenney logo. The packs cover 3D, 2D, UI and audio, so they suit game prototypes.

Blendkit (formerly BlenderKit)

BlenderKit was renamed Blendkit on 23 June 2026, to respect Blender's trademark. It now lives at blendkit.com. Its assets are Royalty Free or CC0, and it says everything you download can be used commercially. The Royalty Free licence does not require credit, but you cannot resell the assets, even modified.

On 18 October 2026 the free plan page listed 23,717 models, 42,455 materials and 5,094 HDRIs. You get the free assets through the Blendkit add-on inside Blender, not from the website.

Blender Studio and blender.org demo files

Blender Studio shares characters and files from its open movies. Some are free: the Pip character, for example, is free under CC BY 4.0, which means you must credit Blender Studio. Some other files need a Blender Studio subscription, so check the label on each one.

The blender.org demo files page lists each file with its own licence (CC0, CC-BY or CC-BY-SA). It also has asset bundles made to drop into your Asset Library, such as Human Base Meshes (CC0) and the Ellie Pose Library (CC-BY).

Quaternius

Quaternius makes free game asset packs, such as characters, nature and buildings. Its FAQ says all models are CC0. Its newer licence page (the Quaternius Asset License) says you can use them free in personal and commercial projects with no credit, but you cannot resell or redistribute the assets themselves. The two pages do not match, so follow the licence file inside the pack you download.

Sketchfab

Sketchfab is a huge model library, but only some models can be downloaded. Turn on the Downloadable toggle in search. Each downloadable model has its own licence: Standard, or a Creative Commons licence (CC BY, BY-NC, BY-ND, BY-SA or CC0). All the CC licences except CC0 need credit to the author.

This follows how Sketchfab and Blendkit describe these licences in their help pages. It is a summary, not legal advice. When in doubt, use CC0 assets, or read the full licence text.

Add free assets to Blender's Asset Browser

Blender can keep your downloads in an asset library, so you can drag them into any scene from the Asset Browser.

  1. Make a folder for your library, for example "Blender Assets".
  2. In Edit > Preferences, open Asset Libraries (under File Paths in older versions) and add that folder.
  3. Save the downloaded .blend files into that folder. In each file, select an object or material and use Mark as Asset (in the Outliner's right-click menu, or the Object menu for objects), then save.
  4. Open the Asset Browser editor and pick your library to drag assets into your scene.

Bundles such as Human Base Meshes on blender.org are already marked as assets, so you only need to put them in the library folder.

Can't find the asset you need? Make it

Free libraries rarely have the exact prop you want. On this site you can make one: Text to 3D turns a written description into a 3D model, and Image to 3D turns a picture into one.

Then give it a texture with the AI 3D texturing studio: describe the look and download a textured GLB, which Blender opens through its glTF importer. For floors and walls, grab a seamless set from our free texture library. The Blender textures guide shows how to connect each map.

Texture a model with AI

Upload a GLB, OBJ, FBX, STL or PLY, describe the look, and download a textured GLB plus the texture PNG.

Questions

Where can I download free Blender assets?

Poly Haven, ambientCG and Kenney give away CC0 assets you can use anywhere with no credit. Blendkit (formerly BlenderKit) has a large free tier inside Blender. Sketchfab, Blender Studio and blender.org demo files have free assets with mixed licences.

Can I use free Blender assets in commercial projects?

It depends on the licence. CC0, CC BY and Blendkit's Royalty Free licence allow commercial use (CC BY needs credit). CC BY-NC does not. Check the licence of each asset before you sell your work.

Is BlenderKit still free?

Yes, it has a free plan. BlenderKit was renamed Blendkit in June 2026. Its free plan includes tens of thousands of models and materials, downloaded through its Blender add-on, and a paid plan unlocks the rest.

What does CC0 mean for a 3D asset?

CC0 means the creator gave up their rights, as far as the law allows. You can use, change and sell work made with the asset, and you do not have to credit anyone.

Are Poly Haven assets really free?

Yes. Poly Haven says all its HDRIs, textures and models are CC0 and free to download. It sells an official Blender add-on as a way to support the project, but you do not need it to get the assets.

Ready to texture something?

Upload a GLB, OBJ, FBX, STL or PLY file (or pick a sample), describe the look, and let AI paint it from every side.
