How to make a 3D text flip

  1. 1

    Type two words

Word A is read from the left side, word B from the right. Up to 12 characters each: A-Z, 0-9 and & ! ?. Words of different lengths are fine.

  2. 2

    Pick the style

Choose a font and letter height, the gap between letters and the base plate. Bold fonts print the most reliably.

  3. 3

    Check both readings

Press View word A and View word B to turn the preview to each reading angle, or drag to look around. Warnings name any letter pair that needs attention.

  4. 4

    Download and print

Save the STL (one piece) or the 3MF (letters and base as two objects for two colours) and print it flat on the bed.

How a text flip works

One object, two words: every block is the overlap of a letter from each word, seen from two sides at 90 degrees.

One block per letter pairLetter 1 of word A is paired with letter 1 of word B, and so on. Each pair becomes one block.
Two shapes cut through each otherLetter A is pushed straight through the block from the left side and letter B from the right side, at 90 degrees. The block keeps only the material that both letters share.
45-degree staircaseThe blocks are set out on a diagonal, so from the left every block lines up to spell word A and from the right they spell word B.
Base plateA flat plate under the letters holds them in line. Turn on the joining bar to give every letter a full-width foot on the plate.

Printing tips

The file is ready to slice as it is. These settings give clean letters.

OrientationPrint it as downloaded: base flat on the bed, letters up. The letters have straight sides, so most pairs need no supports.
Layer heightFine layers (about 0.12 to 0.16 mm) keep curved letters smooth. A 0.4 mm nozzle is fine at the default 25 mm height.
MaterialPLA or PETG. Use a strong contrast if you print the letters and the base in two colours.
SizeBigger letters print better: at small sizes the thin parts where two letters cross can be too thin for the nozzle. The tool warns you about those pairs.
ViewingLook at it from about 45 degrees to the left and to the right of the front, at the height of the letters.

3D text flip FAQ

A text flip is a 3D printed object that shows one word from one side and a different word from the side at 90 degrees. Each letter of the first word is cut through the matching letter of the second word, so the same block of plastic reads as two letters. It is a popular desk toy and gift.
Type the two words in the boxes at the top of this page, choose a font, letter height and base, and check both readings in the preview. Then download the STL or 3MF, open it in your slicer and print it with the base flat on the bed. No signup and no install.
No. Each letter of one word is paired with one letter of the other, so the shorter word is padded with plain filler blocks: a thin post or a small diamond, placed at the start, the end or both sides. The filler shows as a simple shape when you look from the shorter word's side.
Capital letters A to Z (lower-case letters are made capital), numbers 0 to 9, spaces and the symbols &, ! and ?. Up to 12 characters per word. The bundled fonts have no heart symbol, so it is not offered. Note that ! and ? have a gap in the middle, which cuts that height out of the letter they are paired with.
Some pairs share very little material, for example a thin letter crossed with a wide open one, so they can end up as tiny bits or parts that do not touch the base. The warning names the pair. A bold font, a bigger letter height or the joining bar usually fixes it.
Yes. The 3MF download has two objects, Letters and Base, so a multi-colour or multi-material printer can give each its own filament. On a single-colour printer you can also pause and swap filament at the layer where the letters start.
No. Upside-down or flipped text generators turn typed text into mirrored Unicode characters for social posts. This page makes a 3D model file for a 3D printer: one solid object that reads as two different words from two sides.
It is free with no signup. The model is built in your browser and the files are made on your device; the words you type are not uploaded.

Fonts: Helvetiker, Optimer and Gentilis typeface fonts bundled with three.js. Check that the words you print are yours to use if you sell the prints.
